Crossed. by Emily McIntire
It's a dark, contemporary romantic retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, part of the Never After series. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. I am not sure if I could pick a favorite.
The FMC, Amaya, is essentially a single-mom to her autistic younger brother Quinten. She is the town pariah, works as an exotic dancer, does the best she can with the cards life dealt her. Her attitude and dislike of the judgy townspeople spoke to me on a personal level...
Cade, the MMC is, how should I say this?... a very hands-on, helpful priest. He's new to the town, speaks French (be still my love of accented men), and is instantly intrigued by our FMC.
I don't even remember when I stepped into Emily McIntire's fairytale world... 3 years ago? Anyway, after reading Scarred, Hooked and Wretched, I had trouble getting into Crossed. Why? No idea.
So I DNFed it ages ago. It's been sitting on my Kindle. I suppose, waiting for me to circle back.
When I picked it up this time, I couldn't stop. One day. That's all it took. I literally DEVOURED it. This is exactly what I needed. I wasn't in a "reading slump" per se, but Crossed definitely sparked a frenzy. And because of it, I read 3 more books over the next few days.
Did this book change my life? Nah.
Did I have a dang good time reading it? Yep.
I am giving this baby 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am grateful for the spark it ignited in my reading life.
It's a cruel place here on earth, filled with people who don't get it. Who choose not to understand that just because someone is different, it doesn't mean they're less than. (49)
